The W&OD Tail is a 45 mile long tail which is actually a 100 foot wide park that is 45 miles long. It is a converted railroad line to a multi-use trail. Read it’s history HERE.
Along this trail there are many underpassess, overpasses, and trails, roads that intersect. The great way-finding signage helps any user and visitor to the area, helpful information.
Some interesting observations:
- Every underpass had a road name sign. This is a great safety feature as well as being informational.
- Trail intersections would have a sign letting the user know the trail name or place.
- There were road signs along with other signa like “stop ahead” where the trail would cross a road.
- After crossing a road, there would be a sign with the trail name, many times as an ADOPT-A-TRAIL program.
- At one point, a divided trail exited, with walkers and runners on one side and riders on the other. The divider sign was humorous; “Wheels and Heels.”
- Even signs for city boundries, we did make it to Vienna, Virginia.
Below is a Gallery of photos I captured from a video I took in 2024 on a ride on the W&OD trail with my son. Scrolling through the Gallery, there are some captions in addition to the image name. Double clicking on the image will bring up a lightbox with a larger image, but the caption will not be visible. Just a limitation to the tool.
